In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people online sought hope, inspiration, and common cause. Sometimes hope comes from unexpected places. Driven by the legitimate support of Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, a people-powered movement to make Dogecoin the next great cryptocurrency gained steam and the momentum continues today.
Even from its humble and ironic beginnings, the creators of Dogecoin felt it could be more than just crypto. It could foster a kind, fun, generous, silly, and uplifting community. Before gaining the recent attention and momentum that it has in 2021, the platform was used for do-good projects such as bringing clean water to Kenya in the midst of crisis, and raising money to send the Jamaican Bobsled team to the Winter Olympics in 2014. Here is an excerpt from a recently published open letter from co-creator Billy Markus.
The #DogeArmy refers to the growing online community who support the coin and have taken Markus’ message to heart. They are striving to make the movement so much bigger than themselves! They support the coin, but they also aspire to do better, together. The next time you’re on Social Media, search the hashtag #DogeArmy to connect with people from all over the world who share this vision!
